Who Are We?

Athero Express is a research initiative at UMC Utrecht focused on understanding atherosclerosis by combining genetic analysis, advanced imaging, and detailed data research.

We study atherosclerotic plaques to uncover how genetic and biological factors relate to cardiovascular risk. By combining genetic sequencing with detailed clinical data, we identify meaningful correlations across a variety of variables. This approach helps us better understand the mechanisms behind cardiovascular disease.

Meet the team

We’re a close-knit, international team of researchers, clinicians, and PhD students based at UMC Utrecht, all driven by a shared curiosity about cardiovascular disease. Our backgrounds span medicine, biology, data science, and pathology, and we each bring something different to the table. Whether it's hands-on lab experience, clinical insight, or a knack for turning complex data into clear stories, every contribution matters.

What connects us is a shared motivation to better understand the processes behind atherosclerosis and contribute meaningful insights to cardiovascular research. We spend our days studying real tissue, exploring data, asking questions, and learning from each other. Our goal is to generate insights that not only advance science, but also support the work of others in the field.

Science is rarely a solo effort. We value the collaboration, discussion, and diverse perspectives that come with working as a team. From experienced investigators to early-career scientists, we’re all here for the same reason: to explore, discover, and push cardiovascular research forward.

How We Are Funded

Athero-Express is supported by leading institutions committed to advancing cardiovascular research through international collaboration and innovation.

Collaboration That Moves Research Forward

The work of Athero-Express is made possible by the continued support of UMC Utrecht and the International Atherosclerosis Society. Their backing allows us to bring together a diverse community of researchers, united by a shared goal: to better understand and treat cardiovascular disease.

Thanks to this support, we’re able to combine rich clinical, genetic, and imaging data into tools like AtheroPortal and the upcoming Express-Scan. These resources help turn complex data into real insights and advances research that has the potential to make a lasting impact on patient care.
